mysterious Samsung mkv issue

Hey folks!

I'm a big fan of Serviio and bought a pro version of the tool. Currently I'm using v 1.5. Today, a mysterious problem occurred and I hope, that you can help me with that problem:

I have an own server at home (Windows Server 2012 R2) running Serviio v 1.5, connected via LAN over an AVM Fritzbox 6360 cable to multiple Samsung devices (beginning with a D Series TV, two F Series Bluray Players and a H Series TV). Serviio always worked with this setup in the past. Currently I am watching a Series, packed in an .mkv container (h.264 coded) and had no problems watching it over the described settings until yesterday. All I did is installing a Windows Server Update and restarting the server. After that, I am no longer able to watch the series on ANY of my Samsung devices. Also I chose the current profile in the console. I have no clue, how to deal with this problem, can you guys help me in any way?

Re: mysterious Samsung mkv issue

Almost sounds like the Windows update reset your firewall settings and is blocking the necessary ports. I've run Serviio on Server 2003, Home Server 2011 and Windows 7 without issue. The vast majority of my videos are in MKV containers, and a number of them have H264 video. All play without issue.

First place to check is the firewall settings. I'm unfamiliar with Server 2012, so am unsure exactly where the settings are found. My guess is the usual Computer properties, but you may need to dig a little. Personally, since everything on my network is firewalled from the Internet and has anti-virus, I run my servers with the firewall turned off. Not suggesting you do the same, as that's a comfort level that only you can judge. You might just as a test turn it off and see if Serviio becomes available again.

Of course, this is assuming that you can't even see Serviio from your Samsung devices. If you can see it, but nothing plays, then we'll have to try something else.

Re: mysterious Samsung mkv issue

That is the funny part: I can see Serviio on the Samsung devices... even the thumbnails are created correctly... i have checked other (older) files of different stuff I hat watched on that setup a few weeks ago (also h.264/mkv)... nothing... looks like my Samsung devices "forgot" how to handle that kinde of codecs???

I checked an example file with mediainfo... this is how the file is coded... can you see a problem here? by the way: I turned the firewall off and tried again... still not able to play mkvs...

File this one under the Twilight Zone...

Glad the reinstall took care of it. Sometimes computers just like to have their way with us!
