4K Support

Hi All,

Should i expect serviio to recognise 4k files when scanning my library? I have the timescapes 4k videos (4k and 1080p) and when browsing only the 1080p videos show in the browser? The folder contains:-

shared videos/TimeScapes/TimeScapes (2012).mp4
shared videos/TimeScapes/TimeScapes.Directors.Commentary.1080p.mp4

The only file that shows up is the directors commentary. Any ideas?

Cheers

Re: 4K Support

I have one 4K clip (Sintel). It displays in the list but won't play. When I switch from Serviio to the PC itself, the TV will play it, so I know there's something in the Samsung H profile that isn't optimized for 4K. Unfortunately I think none of the transcoding gurus here have a 4K set to use to create a new 4K profile. I know enough to tweak an existing profile, but haven't a clue how to build a new one from scratch.

I've posted the Device Spy info for the JU series on the wiki page, but I don't know how to translate that into the first part of the profile, which of course guides the remainder of the profile.

Which profile do you have selected, and what TV are you using?

Re: 4K Support

LG TV and its set to LG TV/Player profile. Doesn't even list the video under LG dlna smartshare.

However if i use serviio mediabrowser when on my pc the video is listed, i assume tats just because media browsers use the CDS api.

Re: 4K Support

OK, that isolates the issue for you as the LG profile. I noticed that there's only one LG profile, compared to multiples for Samsung and Sony. Someone with the necessary knowledge will need to update (preferably create a new version) the LG profile for 4K. In my opinion, all 4K sets need their own dedicated profile, just for issues like this. I wish I understood the profiles better, as I'd be happy to work on it.

You are correct that MediaBrowser uses its own profile, which will show files that the TV profile does not recognize.

Re: 4K Support

It may be that your TV does not support streaming of 4K files via DLNA. For example, some 4K Sony models do not support it (https://sony-paa-pa-en-web--paa.custhel ... p1bQ%3D%3D).

The best place to start is to confirm whether your TV actually supports 4K via DLNA. Maybe in your manual, or Google may help.

DenyAll is spot on. My Samsung will play 4K over DLNA, but I have no idea about your LG, especially since you still haven't said the model.

I did a search for LG DLNA support, and I couldn't find anything. As has been mentioned, many TVs can play files via USB but not DLNA. Nothing Serviio can do about that, except transcode the file to 1080p. Kind of defeats the purpose.

The way I confirmed my TV can play something via DLNA is to access the built-in Windows DLNA server and try playing the file. The only 4K video I have will play that way, so for that file I know the issue is with my Serviio profile. However, I don't know how to determine where the issue is. Probably in all that text at the beginning of each profile that identifies the file types.

Re: 4K Support

Thanks, trying not to spill my issue over multiple threads. But I have a word from LG that the files will play over DLNA. How much accuracy there is in that statement is another matter though!

"Thank you for your query regarding this TV 65UF850V and of course I can help you with this. It would seem that what you have read is incorrect.

As this TV is a 4K TV, if you can provide the TV with a 4K input then the TV would display it without any issues and this would be over DNLA or a USB stick.

I hope you are happy with the service that I have personally provided, if you are, please take the time to fill out a short survey that rates me on my customer service to you today. It is based solely on my efforts for you. I appreciate any feedback given!"

Yeah, that's a pretty generic response, and doesn't mentions the supported formats. And he/she couldn't spell DLNA! I know, a typo

I'd try the method I used, which was to play it via Windows Media DLNA services. If it plays there (as mine did), then the issue is the Serviio profile. If it won't, then that particular file won't play via DLNA.

Re: 4K Support

Beginning with Windows 7, Microsoft built a DLNA server into Windows Media Player. I think it's enabled by default, but I could be wrong.

Open Windows Media Player. On the menu bar there should be an option labeled "Stream". Click that and the menu opens, with Media Streaming at the bottom. On my Work PC (the only Win 7 I have in front of me at the moment) it says "Turn on media streaming...", indicating that it is currently turned off. My Windows 10 computer says "More streaming options...", because it's already on. Clicking on either allows you to configure what you share, and what devices are permitted to connect. Once it's enabled, you'll see it as another DLNA service available on your player/TV. On my Samsung, it has a Windows icon instead of the Serviio icon, so it's real obvious which is which.

Take a look and let me know if you need more.

Then my thought is that the TV doesn't support that particular video via DLNA. Remember that many (most) devices will not necessarily play the same files via DLNA that plays via USB. From what I've seen, USB support is more robust than DLNA. There's nothing Serviio can do about that except transcode the file into something the TV supports.

It might be worth seeing what video and audio codecs your file contains. Get the media info and post it back here.

Re: 4K Support

The one thing I noticed is your FFMPEG is over a year old. It's possible it doesn't contain x265 support. I can't compare it to my version, as I always replace the Serviio included version with a later 64 bit version. What version of Serviio are you using?
