Minimize to Tray

I just installed v1.6 on Win7 x64 and I'm feeling pretty stupid. Clicking 'X' closes Serviio. Clicking '-' minimizes to the taskbar.

I see no option to cause it to minimize to the system tray.
It's kind of big and ugly to leave open like that at all times.

With version 1.6, there is no longer a tray app, because the is no longer a console program. The console is now web based, so you don't have to leave a console running any longer. When you click the X and close the console, that does not stop the Serviio service. It's still there. Also, you can connect to the console from any computer on your network, so you don't need to be at the Serviio computer to make changes. Just start a browser on any computer and use this URL: http:/serviiocomputername:23423/console. If you are on the Serviio computer, you can replace the name with localhost, or just use the Serviio shortcut that was installed.

Re: Minimize to Tray

You're saying this is not a console?:
Image

I dunno, the URL you provided doesn't seem to work for me, neither does http://localhost:23423/console
Frankly, if this is true, it's a bit of a weird turn for Serviio. I'm not using WMP to serve files because I didn't want a service running at all times.
I can't see I like the new version.

Re: Minimize to Tray

Serviio has always run as a Service before, on Windows. So that is no news in 1.6. The image is indeed a console, but the executable is just a Chrome wrapper that opens the web page running on the server.

The tray, before 1.6, belonged to the original console, so the fact it was showing was due to the console being started (albeit perhaps minimised), not the server.

So the only difference now is that the console doesn't minimise into the tray and you can simply close it once you're done configuring Serviio.

Re: Minimize to Tray

Okay, so it's a wrapper and not a true console, but that's semantics. It would still be nice to be able to minimize the wrapper it to the tray and give it back the 'Force Refresh' right-click option.

Re: Minimize to Tray

....and the open console and the stop serviio like most servers offer, instead of having to go to the start menu or open the desktop to access shortcuts to do the same. #notuserfriendly

Seems the tray is still in Windows 10 so that's not a reason for its removal.

No, it's not a console app. It is an Internet browser that is configured to access only the local Serviio web page, and hide all other browser components. If you go to any other computer on your network and enter http://serviiocomputername:23423/console, you will see the exact same "console". There may be a way to minimize the icon to the system tray, but remember that the icon has no bearing on if the Serviio service is running. When you closed the console in previous versions of Serviio, it did NOT stop the service.

I'm certain that someone could write a script to do what you want, but personally I would not want Serviio to do that by default. I leave my server up at all times, and want to be able to access it without the need to start the service first. Could have something to do with the fact my home has more than one floor, and I'm getting too old to climb the stairs, start Serviio, then come back down to watch something in the den or family room. :D

Re: Minimize to Tray

I hate this version with a vengeance. It no longer does what I want it to do without having to go through many more clicks and constant resizing to find what you want. I shall now restore the previous version, go back to software that works and no longer update. If I find I cannot use this for the future then it will be time to move on.
PS
Despite my intention to restore Serviio to the previous version it won't let me overwrite 1.6.1 version's settings, so I now have to uninstall and completely reinstall the previous version.
THIS IS NOT AN UPDATE. IT IS A COMPLETELY NEW VERSION WHICH SERVIIO HAVE ROLLED OUT TO DUPE EXISTING USERS. IT SHOULD HAVE A COMPLETELY NEW NUMBERING SYSTEM TO REFLECT THIS.
Change for change sake and much worse for it!

Re: Minimize to Tray

As a follow up Serviio no longer works at all!
1.5.2 would not let me install over the later crappy version 1.6.2, so I had to uninstall Serviio completely.
After a clean reinstall of 1.5 2 and restoration of my library I got an error message 500 which wouldn't let me use my previous library settings. Tried starting the library again from scratch but still had the error and the files showed a mix of metadata (which I never use) with an incmplete list. Forcing a library update just kept giving me the 500 error.
Another uninstall and re-install of Serviio, but this time decided I would have to manually set it up again from scratch: if only...
First I got a missing node.dll error. As I couldn't find this file anywhere on my existing system, nor my previous backup,I assumed it was never needed and unstallled and re-installled again.
This time no node.dll error but a missing /jre file.
Updated Java 32 and 64 bit to latest versions, but still the error.
Uninstalled Java completely and reinstalled the latest 32 and 64 bit versions. Still the error.
Uninstalled and re-installed Serviio and the java error no longer shows, but a new error message stating the Serviio service is not running.
When I manually start the service it stops again after a couple of seconds. Cannot run the Serviio console using the bat file either.
I think the substantial changes made in 1.6.2 have screwed up my Serviio for good. I have changed nothing on my system but now Serviio will not work at all. So much for progress. Another 6 hours wasted on crappy software.
If it worked before 1.6.2 why doesn't it now work with 1.5.2 or has 1.6.2 now made it impossible for me to go back?
Anyone know of how I can get Serviio working again, or do I now have to look for an alternative?

What OS are you running? I'm on Win7 and had no problem uninstalling v1.6 and reinstalling v1.5.2.
You might also want to make sure your main Serviio directory is completely empty as well as c:\\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Serviio-Console-Wrapper, so that there is nothing from 1.6.x left behind.
Maybe something 1.6 was still running in the background when you uninstalled and didn't leave gracefully.

Edit: Ah, I see the reason for the change. The dev team decided to ape Plex.
Serviio people: If we wanted a software that acted like Plex, we wouldn't be running Serviio!!

You don't become great by copying your competition.

Edit 2: Here we go: http://rbtray.sourceforge.net/
RbTray lets you right-click to minimize anything to the system tray.
