Is there a sticky???

Why do I feel like I'm the only one on here that is soooo frustrated????? I have been through all of the threads and FAQ's but all I get is GEEK..... 2 weeks I've been struggling but just can't find the answers . I have 3 samsung tv's one 58 inch plasma "d" series and un32c5000 and un46c5000. Sometimes serviio works great....other times like Loungo in the playoffs :). Anyway got this from the Forum:

HOWTO: Provide details of a video file that doesn't play
If a video file cannot be played, locale FFmpeg executable (in lib folder in Serviio installation directory, or a part of your Linux distribution), run this command and post the result in the forum:

On Windows (details here):
Code:
ffmpeg.exe -i "<your_file_location>"

On Linux/ Mac (details here):
Code:
ffmpeg -i <your_file_location>

How do I find my file location??? What File am I looking for??? (might seem obvious if ur a hacker but for the rest of us that bought samsung tv's and have a MAC.....not so much)

My Problem:

I have a MAC osx. 3 samsung tv's (d series and 2 c's) D link dir-825 router, DGS-1008G switch, hard wired cat5e. Seems like the network connection is very slow yet everything is 10/100/1000. Drops connection on all tv's anywhere from not starting to 20 min in to a file. It either says "network connection unavailable" or "file format not supported..i think) on a good day those exact same files will play awesome. This happens on simple avi files as well MKV. Just can't figure it out. One Last thing....I've been on a lot of forums. This one seems to lack "how to" stickies. There are a few but IMO could have better and more detailed ones.
Alot of people are changing from windows to mac and now have to be a newb at both a mac and the programs they use....please be patient with us :)

Lastly.....from what I've read Servio is the way to go!!! I'm confident if I can get mine working I will happy just like the rest of you guys that are enjoying Serviio.

Thanks for helping

Sometimes, it is also useful to provide output of MediaInfo (especially for H264 MOV/MP4/MKV files)

Also make sure you mention your OS, renderer device and we might ask you for a detailed log as well.

Re: Is there a sticky???

There is a few places that have the information you are looking for.

http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php

http://www.serviio.org/support

  Code:
How do I find my file location??? What File am I looking for??? (might seem obvious if ur a hacker but for the rest of us that bought samsung tv's and have a MAC.....not so much)

Your file location depends on where you saved the file. On my system, that is on my linux box. So I know the file location based on what folder I saved it in.

Basically the file location should be the folder that you setup for serviio to find the videos in, in the console.

  Code:
ie.  ffpmeg -i  "C:\my documents\videos\video1.avi"

Can you give more information on how your network is configured? Is it all hardwired? or are you using a hybrid wireless / wired setup?

Can you post your serviio.log file. It is in the log folder of the serviio directory.

serviio has one of the best support groups of ANY media serviio currently availible for both free and paid, we provide support forums, FAQs and a growing (by the day, i have to work to) wiki site all avilible free to everyone and reference in the sugniture (the bit at bottom of my message ) of all the helpers (none of us are paid).

Suport section from main site including FAQ : http://www.serviio.org/support

Supprt forums ( here ) : http://forum.serviio.org/

growing wiki: http://wiki.serviio.org/

tbh if we added all the HowTO topics are stick it would take 3 pages before you even got to the actual support posts in each section. ;)

we are already very aware that MAC users are growing ( imho they are mad but each to his own ) that is why there is sections dedicated to mac users on the wiki, with sepcific information on using serviio and mac and even helpful tools that can be used to fix/organise your media. If there is anything else that you would like information on regarding MAC (related to serviio) please feel free to contact me via PM ( private message ) i will be happy to add that information to the wiki.

Re: Is there a sticky???

Moltra,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my issues in such a timely manner.

My Network:

ISP modem plugged in to D'link wireless router
"D" series samsung pluged in to router
2T network HD pluged in to router
iMac plugged in to router
D'link switch plugged in to router
2 "C" series tv's plugged into switch.
Laptop and iphones on wireless wouter.
Serviio running on iMac
IP of iMac is 192.168.0.197 and is bound in serviio console.
all IP addressees are reserved in router
in terms of Serviio - all hard wired cat5e
opened ports tcp 8895 and udp 1900 on router.....I think (is there a way to test this on mac?)

I have attached log fill.....I Think(there are a few)

Is there anything else you need??

Thanks

Cerberus....thank you will take you up on that if need be. Thank you for your efforts, it is very much appreciated(believe me)

Cheers

Re: Is there a sticky???

Look at this thread. There is a few Mac programs (eyeconnect and "hamachi client tunneling engine") that lock the multicasting port.

http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1765&p=9797#p9797

Here is more information from another thread,

Hubert wrote:
zip wrote:Do you have EyeConnect installed? It seems to block the 1900 UDP port for use by other apps. Also enter your PC IP address in the console.

Got rid of EyeConnect using App Cleaner, now the TV 'sees' EyeConnect, where it wouldn't see anything before :?

When you say that ll IP addresses are reserved in the Router are you meaning that you have them setup to be static? that is the best way to get this to work properly.

I will check to see if any other programs could be blocking that port.

The IP addresses are static

Thanks again

Re: Is there a sticky???

I found this, I am not sure if it is installed on every mac or not. Try and see if any of this helps.

  Code:
Using Mac OS X's Built-in Port Scanner
It’s not nmap, but then it’s not meant to be.  Network Utility has a port scanner – it’s built in and really easy to use.  Since Network Utility is distributed with every copy of Mac OS X it stands to reason that every copy of Mac OS X has the ability to scan a port without using a GUI tool.  Enter one of the best named tools in Mac OS X, stroke.  Stroke is the command line back-end to the Port Scan tab of Network Utility.  To use stroke, you will need to cd into the Network Utility application bundle and then cd into Contents and then Resources.

Once you are in the /Applications/Utilities/Network Utility.app/Contents/Resources, you will need to provide stroke with an IP address (or name), followed by the first port to scan and then the last (or the same number twice if your range is only one IP address.  For example, if you want to port scan port 80 on your own system you could use the following:

./stroke 127.0.0.1 80 80

But you shouldn’t just stroke yourself (sorry, couldn’t help it). Â You should also stroke others (Clarence Carter be damned!). Â So if you want to port scan www.google.com for port 80 the following would achieve such a lofty goal:

./stroke www.google.com 80 80

Because the name www.google.com has to resolve, you’re actually able to check whether a DNS error occurs and whether you can communicate over port 80 to the host in one command. Â If you want to make a copy of stroke into a directory and then add it to your environment variable’s PATH you can then use it without needing to change your working directory.

  Code:
Portscan also comes in current OS X version in GUI: Applications > Utilities > Network Utility, tab Port Scan.

  Code:
OSX has a command line port scanner. It’s just super sekrit is all. The questionably named stroke command, is part of Network Utility, which is nestled in your Utilities folder. Normally it’s only exposed through Network Utility’s GUI, but there is a way to get at it from your command prompt.

First, create a link to stroke, preferably somewhere in your $PATH.

ian@mymac:~$ ln /Applications/Utilities/Network\ Utility.app/Contents/Resources/stroke stroke

Next make it executable, if it isn’t already.

ian@mymac:~$ chmod uo+x stroke

Now let’s do a port scan. We will scan the localhost, ports 49152 thru 65535.

ian@mymac:~$ ./stroke 127.0.0.1 49152 65535

Can you install nmap, or even nessus instead? Absolutely. But in an, ehrm, pinch — stroke will do nicely.

Re: Is there a sticky???

sorry just wont to be clear on this as it can get confusing, when trying to debug issues.

Static IP and reserved IP are completely different.

static IP = asigned on the device and not controlled by DHCP (for this to work DHCP has to be off) if unknown device is connected it wont work until it has beens set its own IP.

Reserved/Prefered IP = asigned to the MAC address of the device from a router and is controlled by DHCP so that if a new unknown device is connected it will then be assigned a random ip by DHCP that has not already been reserved by another device.

Ok here is the result of the port scan of my iMac which is the machine Serviio is running on...

Port Scan has started ...

Port Scanning host: 192.168.0.197

Open TCP Port: 88 kerberos
Open TCP Port: 139 netbios-ssn
Open TCP Port: 445 microsoft-ds
Open TCP Port: 515 printer
Open TCP Port: 548 afpovertcp
Open TCP Port: 631 ipp
Open TCP Port: 8895
Open TCP Port: 23423
Open TCP Port: 44331
Open TCP Port: 44332
Port Scan has completed ...

I noticed there are no UDP ports????

Cerberus....my IP's are reserved. Thanks for the clarification. Should I assign Static IP's instead?

Re: Is there a sticky???

Hi Cerberus

Thanks for the link....I have read that many times but that was not my issue as my drive has always been mounted and I was always able to see my folders and files in it. The problem I was having is that the tv would stop playing the file and say "network disconnected"...or ""not supported codec" or "not supported file".

Anyway I will try a new network drive tomorrow and seee how it goes.

Cerberus....did you look at the results of the commands I ran??? I can't really make sense of it.

Will post after upgrading NAD

Cheers

Anyway I will try a new network drive tomorrow and seee how it goes.

Cerberus....did you look at the results of the commands I ran??? I can't really make sense of it.

Will post after upgrading NAD

Cheers

yer it told me that correct ports are open and working, it is a little confusing to read but you get used to them

activity monitor - told me what PID number related to serviio and serviioconsole 227 and 228

then the port scan told me that 227 had port 8895 and 1900 open :) which is what we want :)

and as you found out once files were on local drive it worked fine so the error messages were abit misleading as it was actual serviio loosing access to files rather than tv loosing access to serviio.

Re: Is there a sticky???

another thing to look at is that the user runnning serviio must have permission to access the remote drive.
