Mkv and m4v support and longer buffering

Hey, how can I get Serviio to see mkv files and m4v files?

It says unknown format in the log.

Updating ffmpeg fixed it for everything but these two for me.

Also, my server is on wireless so it would be helpful to change the buffer so videos don't stutter when playing.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Mkv and m4v support and longer buffering

Serviio can stream MKV and M4V just fine. There's nothing wrong there.

Remember that MKV and M4V are just containers. The error is telling you that Serviio can't figure out the codec (video or audio) within the container. We need the file information using either MediaInfo or by running ffmpeg -I {file name}.

Serviio doesn't buffer the video, your player does. What you are encountering is insufficient bandwidth. There are two remedies for this: hard wire Serviio and the player to the network (difficult to impossible for some locations), or reduce the video bitrate that Serviio sends. To help with that, we need to know what your media player is, and what Serviio profile you are currently using. If you don't know what profile is selected, look on the Serviio console on the status tab, find your player (depending on what's on your network, there may only be the Serviio computer and the player), and look at the far right column to see the selected profile.

If the profile selected doesn't seem to be a match for your player, see if something else in the list fits better. After changing the selection, remember to press the Save button.

As all of the above great post but also homeplugs could help with buffer issues if you can't hardwire.

Re: Mkv and m4v support and longer buffering

Thank you so much.

My players are a Panasonic Bluray player and android phones and iphones.

The Panasonic Bluray has the Panasonic BD player profile, the others have generic.

Phones play everything they see in the menu (still not these m4v files, but mkv started showing in menu and playing).

So I couldn't get mediainfo to work but here are the results from a ffmpeg -i in the command prompt on one of the ones I really want to watch on my tv:

  Code:
ffmpeg -i "Y:\\aint you seen my movies\\12 Stimpy's Fan Club.m4v"

I will try to set the Serviio program running on a hard line.

Let me know if you think there is a way to get this movie and ones like it to show in the menu and play.

And thanks for such a fast and detailed response on the weekend.

Re: Mkv and m4v support and longer buffering

your ffmpeg couldn't detect the video track and it's codec. Try to use the latest ffmpeg.

Looks like the ones that aren't working are all from iTunes. Would they have put something on their files so I only can watch them with AppleTV or ipad or one of their products?

Re: Mkv and m4v support and longer buffering

This one plays perfectly.

These m4v movies are from itunes and have drm so you can only play them there. Codec is avc1 with drm on top of it that only itunes can take off unless you re encode the files as avc1 without the drm.

I must have done it with the one below because now only drm files are not in Serviio, ALL my other movies regardless of filetype or warning in the log are in the serviio menu.

So case closed, I am just a dummy and forgot the whole m4v fiasco because it has been so long since I have used an apple product.

I made it a habbit of always downloading the free shows in the itunes store (national geographic, cartoons, all in good quality).

But then when I went to watch them outside itunes, even though they are "free" and I "own" them, I can't play them with mpc or serviio or anything that isn't apple.

And I forgot about it because when I discovered this was when I got an android phone and never touched anything apple again.

When I got my new 2tb drive I piled in every movie I had and it had been so many years its a lot of movies and I forgot about drm and that whole can of worms.

Thanks for trying to help guys, Serviio works well as it was designed.

The difference between the apple goons and you guys is evident in your enthusiasm, diagnostic ability, and the fact that you genuinely seem more interested in helping customers enjoy the free version of your product.

Apple tries to cram proprietary hardware down your throat that expires every two years to obsolescence (iOS X.xx isn't availible on your device, please spend another $500).

Re: Mkv and m4v support and longer buffering

AH, good old DRM. That explains it.

Glad you figured it out. Don't know if we helped much, but glad to try. :D
