Serviio 1.5.1 service shutting down or crashing randomly

I have noticed over the past few days (and it could have been happening earlier) that the serviio service running on my headless Windows XP file server machine has shutting down or crashing, at random. This is causing the serviio console to not be able to be loaded or throws an error because the service is not running. I only start to notice this a few days ago when I tried to connect to the Mediabrowser and I could not. From then I have been seeing problems.

Once I restart the service from the command line (net start serviio) everything starts back up and all is good. But it seems like everyday or every other day I have needed to restart that service. I have started to look most everyday now to see if it is running and I just had to restart the service.

I am running serviio 1.5.1 pro. I can't ever remember having this issue with 1.4. Can someone help point me in the right direction on what I should be looking for and when? I tried looking around the forum for this issue but didn't come across anyone having serviio service issues. I have yet to uninstall and reinstall the software. Thanks.

Re: Serviio 1.5.1 service shutting down or crashing randomly

I have the same problem since upgrading from 1.4 to 1.5.1. Also using XP on the server. System has been rock steady for years under prior releases.

Right now it seems there is a bug in this upgrade. Mine crashes once a day with the service going down by itself. If the monitor is running I usually see a message that the service has stopped running.

I have not figured out a fix yet.

Re: Serviio 1.5.1 service shutting down or crashing randomly

What Service Pack are you on (SP1, SP2, SP3 or base)?
You could try to revert back to the polling method of library updates to see if it is the new library update mechanism that is causing the problem - see http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=lib ... _mechanism and the bit about Forcing POLLER scanner. Restart your server after changing the system property. Please report back if this stabilizes things.
If it isnt this, post a detailed log.

Re: Serviio 1.5.1 service shutting down or crashing randomly

Same here.

I have Win 8.1 x64 and a Linksys router.
Most of the time I start a movie or just a video and after 10-15 mins the service restarts. We have to wait until it comes back and can restart watching.
Did not have this issue previously.
(I did upgrade from 1.5 and Win 7 x64 almost the same time)

Re: Serviio 1.5.1 service shutting down or crashing randomly

My setup is this:

System:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

I'm not sure what triggers it and when. I will have to try the polling method DenyAll when I have a little more time to mess with it. Until then, I wrote a short executable that checks if the service is running, if not, it kills the serviioconsole.exe, restarts the serviio service, and then restarts the serviioconsole.exe. This runs in a 10 second loop and if a restart of the service is required it will write that to a log file. I want to know when / how often it is doing this as well as get serviio back up and running. The serviio debug log just shows lines of cannot connect.

I am going to let it run for a few days and I'll see what my log file says. This is a bandaid for now and thankfully others are having the same experience, I thought I was crazy.

Re: Serviio 1.5.1 service shutting down or crashing randomly

The random crashing continues but there is no pattern to it. Running on XP Pro SP3. Since my Servio seems not to crash when I am using it I setup a temp fix that is described below.

When Serviio crashes it makes an entry in the Event Log (System) of either ID 7034 or 7031 depending on how the Recovery Tab is configured for Service Control Manager.

A fix to auto restart Serviio goes this way. Enter Computer Management by Right Click My Computer then Manage. Click on Services in the right Panel then Services again. Scroll down to the Serviio Service Name, Dclick it then open the Recovery Tab and set First Failure to Restart the Service then Make the Reset Count 10 days. This will give you a cumulative fail count in your Logs over a ten day period.

Serviio is always running for me now since I only use it in the evening and the shutdown has not occurred in that period. Additionally I noticed this whole process started a few days before I upgraded to 1.5.1 and was still in 1.4.x. This makes me believe the real cause is the OS or other apps. I did take in several security updates a while back from Microsoft for example.

It looks like the last call was to retrieve the network interfaces on your PC. Try to upgrade your network card driver.

I went out and found the latest driver for this PC's network card and updated it manually as Microsoft XP was using a generic one. I'll keep an eye on it for another week and see if anything else gets written to the log file. Maybe it could be just as simple as a driver out-of-date. ;)

Well that didn't seem to be it.

It has restarted 3 more times since I updated the network card driver. Other thoughts?

Now that 1.5.2 is out try upgrading your Serviio - I'm 99% sure it won't fix the issue, but will be a necessary step at some stage, so perhaps upgrade whilst waiting for zip to come back to you.
